The first thing that a gas engineer will probably do when they arrive at your house is show you his Gas Safe ID card. In the UK, every gas engineer has to be registered with Gas Safe Register because it replaced the old CORGI system in 2009. A Gas Safe Register card will have the engineer’s photograph, his number, and the types of gas work that the engineer is qualified to carry out.

Some gas engineers will be qualified to carry out domestic boiler work, while others will be qualified for commercial work and LPG work. It takes only a moment to look at the card, but this is one of the most important things that the gas engineer will do during his entire visit. Gas work has to be carried out by a gas engineer who is properly qualified.

A Quick Conversation about the Issue

Once the formalities have been attended to, most Gas Safe registered engineers will ask a few questions about the heating system before they even begin to investigate. This allows them to get an idea of what has been going on.

If you have noticed strange noises, a drop in pressure, or problems with the way the heating has been working, or error codes on the display of the boiler, it can be useful to let the engineer know about these. This can save time in the long run because it may be a vital clue to what has gone wrong.

Inspecting the Boiler and the Surrounding System

The most important part of the visit involves inspecting the boiler and the components connected to it. During a typical service of a boiler, the Gas Safe registered engineer would remove the casing of the boiler and check various internal components of the boiler, including the burner, heat exchanger, and ignition system.

The engineer would also check the surrounding system of the boiler, including the level of pressure within the system and the state of the flue, which carries gases away from the property. All these components of the system need to be checked to ensure that the gas is being burned correctly within the boiler.

Depending on the type of service and the type of boiler, the engineer may also clean various components of the system to remove dirt that may have accumulated.

The visit will consist of a variety of checks to ensure the system operates safely

Gas appliances must be in accordance with strict safety standards. Therefore, a substantial amount of time during the visit will be spent checking the appliance perimeters.

For example, when checking the combustion gases produced by the boiler, the engineer must measure the combustion gases produced using a flue gas analysis. Therefore, the engineer is able to tell if the boiler is burning the fuel correctly and producing emissions within the safe limits allowed by the manufacturer.

The engineer should also visually inspect all joints and connections for any sign of a gas leak and use modern detection equipment that can accurately detect minute gas leaks that would otherwise go unnoticed.

Additionally, the safety of carbon monoxide is another safety requirement determined by the inspection. Serious carbon monoxide safety problems very seldom occur as a result of the inspection, but they assure that the system is functioning properly and that all exhaust gas is being soundly vented out of the house.

Adjustments or minor repairs if necessary

In many instances, the visit may entail adjustments rather than major repairs. Boilers may need pressure adjustments, cleaning of certain parts, and/or calibration of controls in order for everything to run smoothly.

However, if the engineer finds that the problem is more serious, they will most likely explain the problem first before doing any further work. They may be able to repair the problem during the visit itself or may need to change the part and return once they have the correct part. For regular boiler servicing, the visit may only take around 45 minutes to an hour.

A routine visit that helps prevent bigger problems

A visit by a Gas Safe registered engineer is usually an unhurried affair rather than an emergency. It is simply to ensure that the heating system is safe, efficient, and in good working order to deal with the demands of daily life.

In many cases, routine servicing and inspection can prevent problems before they arise, well before an expensive breakdown or emergency call is necessary. For homeowners, that service call can be an important one, especially in winter when the heating system is arguably the most important in the home.
